Fundamental Principles of Graphic Design

A practical guide and exercises for Sudanese beginners. Learn the principles and apply them with examples close to your own surroundings, and finish three projects.

(What it teaches)

How to communicate with images, type and arrangement

This guide is for Sudanese beginners who want to learn to communicate with images, type and the arrangement of elements. You can practise on paper, on a phone or on a computer, and you need no previous design experience. The aim is that you can prepare a clear poster, a useful advertisement for a small business, and a small, coherent visual identity.

Design is not decoration added at the end. It is a set of decisions about what a reader should notice first, what they need to understand, and what you want them to do next. Every choice of size, colour, spacing and typeface either serves those three questions or gets in their way.

Read the lesson, study the example, then do the exercise before you open a new template. Keep your first attempt so that you can compare it with the improved version.

(Who it is for)

Beginners, and the decisions a book written elsewhere will not make for you

Almost everything in the guide would be true in any language and any city. A few things would not, and the book settles them before the principles begin: which language leads and which supports; how Arabic and Latin scripts behave at the same size; whether to use Arabic-Indic or Western numerals; the fact that most of this work will be met as an image forwarded in a message, seen at the size of a hand; and what the printer down the road can actually produce this week.

The businesses, events and dates in the examples are fictional and made for learning. They do not represent the results of real Sudanese businesses, and they do not assume that all Sudanese audiences are alike.

Around the lessons

Two short chapters of history, from the cave wall to the press and through the twentieth century. The essential seven principles on one page, and twelve tiles that state each principle with nothing else in the frame. A worked example that follows a bakery advertisement from brief to sketch, through canvas, grid and type, colour, contrast and the photograph, to the vertical version and the export, then a second worked example for a workshop poster and two campaigns worth studying. Pages on identity and the digital product, drawing, motion and the shelf, new tools, and design that includes more people.

At the end: twelve short exercises to keep, a reusable planning sheet, a review card to score your design before delivery, suggested solutions, a fourteen-day practice plan, a practical glossary with the Arabic term beside each English one, sources and further learning, a credits and permissions page, every lesson drawn as one mark, and an appendix of the seventeen drawings from the original manuscript.

(The projects)

Three practical projects with client briefs

  • PROJECT 01

An advertisement for a small business

A fictional home business, Dar Biscuits, sells a box of six pieces by advance order and wants a clear square advertisement for people who see it on a phone. You design it at 1080 by 1080 pixels and again as a vertical version, without adding a price, a discount, a health claim or a delivery promise.

  • PROJECT 02

    A bilingual poster

A fictional community group wants to register readers of Arabic and of English for a beginner drawing workshop. The poster must carry the same information in both languages without hiding either one in small type. An A4 poster and a screen preview, with at most two type families and one illustration.

  • PROJECT 03

An identity for a coffee business

Jabana is a small fictional coffee business. You design an original wordmark and a one-colour version, a palette of three or four colours, and type styles, then show the system on an A5 menu and a square advertisement, with an identity page that explains the rules.

  • PLAN

    A fourteen-day practice plan

A flexible sequence of 30 to 45 minute sessions: study three advertisements and write a brief, practise hierarchy in black and white, test typefaces in both languages, build a palette, then complete the three projects and organise a small portfolio on day fourteen.

Twelve tiles, one idea each: twelve principles, each reduced to a single diagram and a single sentence
